St. Wenceslas

ST. WENCESLAS | 1999

The sculpture shows St. Wenceslas, Czech Prince and Patron, sitting on the stomach of a dead horse hanging by its legs to the ceiling. The horse has its head hanging downwards with tongue hanging out and thus has the semblance of a hunted animal.

Initially the sculpture was located in the lower section Wenceslas Square within the scope of the exhibition that took place in autumn 1999. It is installed in Lucerna since year 2000.

This sculpture should have depicted the current state of the Czech Republic through the eyes of David Černý - it is non-functional and we have all adopted the “as though nothing is happening” attitude.

Allegedly, the sculpture should be installed in Lucerna until the Constitutional Monarchy shall be re-established in the Czech Crown Lands.

Did you know that...

The sculpture is made of polystyrene foam and epoxy resins. Height 470 cm, length 290 cm.
