Torso of a Tank

TORSO OF A TANK | 2018

The torso of a tank is positioned on Kinsky Square, which David Černý installed here for the fiftieth anniversary of the Soviets occupying the Czech lands as a commemoration of this period. Initially, Černý received permission to locate the torso of the tank here for just a few days, but in the end, the local council and conservationists were able to come to an agreement, and the torso is to remain here permanently.

Did you know that…

There is a complicated history of tanks on Kinsky Square. David Černý’s first act of art was to repaint a tank located here pink. This caused uproar, and the local council restored the original colour. The tank was repainted pink, however, and in the end the tank was relocated to the museum in Lešany. In 2001, a pink torso of a tank was positioned here without the council’s approval, and so it remained here for a short time only. It reappeared in 2008 as a result of the Russian-Georgian conflict. Černý’s torso of a tank has been on Kinsky Square permanently since 2018.
